I will be eternally grateful to whomoever can tell me how to remedy this
situation:

Whenever I create a new document in Word 2003 - a ghost file gets created as
well. For example, if my file is called me.doc - a second, temporary file
called ~me.tmp shows up as well!

And no matter how I try, I cannot rid myself of this file!!

Can anyone suggest what to do - because these tmp files are adding up and
causing me a lot of grief!

I can be reached at curiously-george@rogers.com

THANK YOU!!

First, this is NOT a "problem", it's the way Word is supposed to work.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632 for a description of
Word's temp file usage.

Second, if you don't look for these files, you won't see them. You can
use the options in Windows Explorer to turn off display of hidden
files. Also, if all this is on the desktop, well, that's generally a
poor work habit. Use the My Documents folder or some other documents
folder instead.

Third, if the files hang around after you shut down Word, you can do
some manual cleanup. See
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm for
instructions.

Fourth, you're off-topic for this newsgroup. The question has nothing
to do with userforms or VBA.

Well gee Jay, it must be wonderful to be a Word MVP because apparently that
entitles you to treat everyone else as less than human.

Free advice: when people ask questions politely, it's usually typical to
answer in kind. And for someone who believes he knows so much about Word,
your explanations are about as clear as mud.

A little exercise in patience (who CARES if a post is accidentally off-topic
here? Is it really that important to you?) is aso in order. If you present
yourself this way online, one can only imagine how you interface in the real
world. Frightening.

G'day "Starfish" <marzupan@rogers.com>,

I doubt Jay's post was offensive enough to warrant this sort of waste
of bandwidth. It makes our job difficult enough answering who knows
how many questions a day, as Jay has done for YEARS here, without
strange, completely off-topic posts cluttering us up. Let alone abuse.

Being an MVP means that Jay does his damnedest all year around, year
in and our, helping humans. As a servant of humans, I think that
really qualifies him as less as human. From the other POV, we have no
lives of our own, we spend them here helping yours.

Please be considerate :-)

being helpful "year in and out" doesn't entitle people to be rude. So you
receive posts that are off-topic?....well, i believe there's more bandwith
being wasted by telling those who mistakenly come and seek help. won't make
that mistake again.

Jay wasn't rude, but you were.  If you took your microwave into a auto shop
complaining that thing heated food when you pressed the start button would
you call the mechanic rude if he told you that that is how it is supposed to
work?  Then if he went on to to explain to you why it heats food when you
press the start button I would have to agree with the Word Heretic and say
that he is more interested in being polite and than trying to be rude.

Your statement:

> I will be eternally grateful to whomoever can tell me how to remedy this

didn't ring true.  Jay did just that.  Instead of being grateful you where
annoyed.

Did you read the KB article Jay provided?  Clear as mud?  More like crystal
clear.

Standing by to politely assist with any other Word issues that you may have.
