Hi folks,

I hope I'm posting this in the correct discussion group.

I'm trying to build a form in Word for other people to fill in. I have done
this before with the normal form tools but this time I would like the form
user (once the form is locked) to be able to insert an excel graph or an
image if the excel graph isn't possible, into the form.  I've looked at the
ActiveX controls and there seems to be an image control but it doesn't seem
to do anything (like the other form elements do) and I can't find any
information anywhere on how it should work.  Could someone provide me with a
pointer to a help file/tutorial on this, if one exists?

Thank you!

Kind regards,

Karen Howie

You can download the sample template from
http://jay-freedman.info/form_picture.zip and look at the code there. It's
for inserting a picture from a disk file. You may be able to modify it to
insert a live Excel graph -- I haven't looked at that task.

Hi Jay,

Thanks, this is great!  I'll investigate adding an Excel graph and post back
here if I work it out.  As a matter of interest, how do you learn how to do
all this stuff?  Is there a recommended book out there or some Internet sites
which I've just missed?  Everytime I go to write macros, I find it difficult
to find any info on where to start.

Thanks for this!!

Kind regards,

Karen

Hi,

I don't suppose there is a way of doing this without Macros?  Just found out
that running macro's is a bit of a show stopper, due to the security
restrictions on them.

Thanks,

Kind regards,

Karen

You could insert section breaks before and after the location where the
object is to be inserted, and choose (in the Tools > Protect Document
dialog) not to protect the section between the breaks. However, you can't
control what the users put there -- it's just ordinary document space.

An alternative is to allow the users to do manually what the macro does
automatically: Unprotect the document, insert the object, and reprotect the
document. There's a bit of a problem with that, too, unless they're using
Word 2002 or 2003: reprotecting the document empties all the form fields. In
2002/2003, that doesn't happen if you use the lock icon on the Forms toolbar
(but does still occur if you use the Tools > Protect Document dialog).

The unprotected section might do the trick Jay.  Thanks for this!  I had no
idea this could be done in Word.

Thanks again for all of your help,

Karen
