Hi! I work with a word document of 40 pages. I need to protec the document
from page 3 to page 34 and page 39 for no changes (read only) but leave the
rest of the pages without protection. if I go tools>protect document>no
changes (read only) the entire document is protected. How can I specify
settings to specific sections to protect document?

Insert section breaks.

It's hardly a matter of skill. Insert section breaks to delimit the areas
where you do/don't want the protection to apply. The go to Tools > Protect
Document, specify the restrictions you want and click 'Select Sections' to
specify the sections to which the protection applies.
