Word will not put in readable format, ie English in my case, files that have
been firstly saved on the hard drive and subsequently saved to cd-rw. When
the file is opened all that appears is (to me) meaningless symbols.

Do not either save directly to a CD Drive or open a file from one.  Always
use Windows Explorer to move files from or back to the hard drive and
save/open them there.
