use of form fields in word using {Ref}

I am able to get the fileds to operate properly but as soon as I secure/lock
the document the visual cue of {Ref} and the grey highlight disappear. I
would like the gray highlight to remain so the user can scan the document to
verify that all the ref. fields have been properly filled in according to the
bookmark.

Tools > Options > View tab > Field Shading: Always.
