Autotext not saving with template (con't from previous article)

I apologize if this post saves, since I cannot reply as a continuation to my
previous post, I had to start a new one. Every attempt to continue my
previous thread results in an error message.

The autotext saves with the template apparantly. Since it is there when I
access the template from my computer. I save the template to a network drive
and assign it as the Workgroup templates directory under Word's
Tools>Options>File locations. If I access the template with File>New on my
machine it is there. However, if I use another computer in the same manner,
the template is there along with the macros, but not the autotext.

Another oddity which may shed some light on the problem. I saved the
template to a network drive three directories deep. The template icon appears
in two locations in the dialogh box depending where I am accessing it from.
Accessing it from my machine, it appears in directory specific tab in the
dialog box (as well as the General tab). However, when I access the template
from another computer replicating every move, the icon appears only under the
General tab (along with some files with .doc extensions) and there is no
directory specific tab in the dialog box.

Thanks for any assistance as this is begining to get very embarassing for me
in training when the template does not work from the training machine.

Looks like you did not specify a template when you created the autotext
entries.

When you do not specify a template, even if you are currently working in a
template, Word will save the autotext entries in Normal.dot.
When you move your template to another computer, you original Normal.dot is
not available, so neither are the autotext entries.

Thanks for a fast response. That explains it. Only I do not see anywhere to
specify a template when creating new auto-text. I assumed that since I was
working in the actual template (.dot) file that it would be saved there also.
That also explains why it saves a normal.dot file along with the template
file on the other computer. So if a user has the template location assigned
to the Word Workgroup templates, and opens a new document based on that
template, it will also pick up the normal.dot from the same location as the
template? Or can I open the .dot file at the network location that I put the
template, recreate the autotext, and save it back to make the autotext stay
for everyone.

I appreciate your help on this. Thanks Jack

Use the Insert/AutoText/AutoText command (rather than the
"shortcut" for creating a new AutoText entry). That gives
you the full AutoText management dialog box. There's a
dropdown at the bottom of the dialog box where you can
select where to save it / which entries to view.
