MS Office Forum / Word / Programming / November 2006Word startup folder empty
I noticed that in our setup for Office 2003, the folder is always empty for the path: Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP Yet, the documentation I've been reading here suggests that this is where document templates are stored (including normal.dot). Is this a change in Word 2003? The normal.dot and default save locale for new templates is in the folder: Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates Is there an operational or good reason to change this from the latter back to the former? If you don't have any add-in templates this folder willbe empty. The documentation you have been reading is wrong. The startup folder is where add-ins (also known as global templates) go. Not where document templates go. > Is this a change in > Word 2003? The startup and user templates folders are separate for a very good reason. Don't try to combine them, or all your templates will get loaded as add-ins, and you don't want that! However, the keystrokes for the macros don't seem to work ... i must be missing something. When you have the Tools Customize dialog open, make sure that the "Save Changes in" box shows the correct template. Are you certain that when the keyboard shortcuts were created that they were stored in the target template by selecting this template name in the "Save changes in:" list in the keyboard key assignment dialog box? What we are trying to do is copy the macros and the keyboard shortcuts over to a new MasterTemplate.dot file on a shared drive so that they can be used by the entire team in her office. I clearly have missed a step in doing the copy from the normal.dot template into the master template. Does she have to recreate the keystrokes in order to save them to the master template? If you did "Save As" from Normal.dot, the keybindings should have been transferred, but they can be a bit flaky at times. So, I guess, to be safe, she should recreate them, making sure to select the "NewTemplate.dot" name in the "Save changes in:" dropdown of the dialog where you assign the new shortcuts.
