Macro Security

I use several programs for contact and matter management.  These are
integrated with Microsoft Word (all versions).  I can create Word templates
that utilize information from the application, insert the information in the
Word document and then edit and send the document.  Macro security only
allows me to run the macros if the security setting is set to LOW.  Obviously
I would like to use a higher setting.  Using the Options in Word 2007 I made
a network shared directory a Trusted Location.  That does not do the trick.

These templates are used by many people, on different computers.  How can I
assign the Trust status to a directory on a network?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

See the article "Distributing macros to other users" at:

http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/DistributeMacros.htm

If you ignore the network performance issues of having people accessing
templates on a network drive, you should set the WorkGroup Templates
Directory on each machine to the network folder that contains the templates.

Doug, thanks but I cannot find the WorkGroup Templates directory setting.  Is
it in Word?  The application and its template directory (containing word
templates) is on a Small Business Server.

Thanks, Richard

I have no experience so the Small Business Server environment, but in Word,
select Options from the Tools menu and then go to the File Locations tab.
That will show you where the Work Group Templates folder has been located if
one has been specified.  If it has not, you can select a folder to be used
for that purpose.  The folder that you so select and set as the Work Groups
Templates folder will be considered as a Trusted Location in Word.  I do not
know if the Small Business Server environment has any influence on this.  If
it does, you might want to post to the microsoft.public.smallbusinessmanager
work group for assistance.

Ok, I went to a computer that was running Word 2003 and it worked.  The
problem is that I am running Word 2007.  I found the Trusted locations and
added the network directory.  It did not work.  Reading the documentation
suggests that it should work, but it will not.  I have determined that the
Server environment has no impact.

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestions.

I gather from your original post that you have checked the box for "Allow
Trusted Locations on my network (not recommended)"

Maybe you should consider the method in the link that I first posted about
distributing macros.

Thanks Doug.  Yes I did check "allow trusted locations on my network".  The
first solution will not work.  FYI let me explain further:

The application has a great many features, on of which is to generate
documents based on information in a SQL database.  Selecting generate
documents -> the document name calls up the document template, opens Word,
and runs the macros to complete the document.  All this works well when the
setting is set to low.

I noticed that after adding the "trusted location" the setting that appears
to qualify is the "high" setting.  That did not work, so I tried the others.

Again, thanks for your help.
