I'm using Windows XP with a laptop and have Word-Pad and Note-Pad but I want
access to Microsoft Word; how to I install the program?  I am unable to print
from Word-Pad.

Word is not part of Windows. It's part of Office, which comes in several
editions, and it's packaged by itself -- but all of these are separate
purchases. There's no way (other than piracy) to get Word for free.

If you're a student or a teacher, or have one in your immediate family, the
Office Student & Teacher Edition may be the least expensive way to get Word.
You should also check the price of Microsoft Works Suite, which also
includes Word (but the plain Microsoft Works, not "Suite", does not include
Word, so be sure what you're looking at).

These packages are generally available at office supply stores (Staples,
OfficeMax, Office Depot), stores that sell software (e.g., Best Buy), and
online vendors such as Amazon.com. Buying directly from Microsoft is
generally more expensive.

Regarding being unable to print: Do you have a default printer selected in
Windows? (Start > Settings > Printers & Faxes, right-click your printer and
choose Set Default)
