I have a background that I want to appear on the first page only.  I have not
figured out how to do this.  It appears on all the pages of the document.
Can anyone tell me how to keep the background on the first page only?

Before you insert the background, click on File | Page Setup | Layout | check
the "Different first page" box | OK.  Then insert the background on the first
page.
