Word 2003 Templates and Addins

I have encountered this anomaly:  when you place a global template in the Word 2003 startup directory (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\STARTUP) it reacts differently depending on how you start Word.  If you open Word from the Start Menu, it loads the template one time.

If you start Word by choosing Start, Run, type winword, and click OK, it loads the global template two times.  When you go to Tools, Templates and Addins, the global template will be listed two times.  Click on each instance and the Full Path shown at the bottom of the dialog will be different.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?  If so, will it affect any other templates?  For example, I am storing a bunch of AutoText entries in a global template named SKGlobal.dot.  If Word is opened using any method other than the Start, Run method, the template is only listed once.  Is there a reason that this happens?

Hi Anne,

I don't know whether this will make a difference, but the Startup folder
under Program Files isn't the right place for Word globals. Instead, put the
template in the folder specified as the Startup location in Tools > Options
> File Locations. Unless it's been changed, that will be C:\Documents and
Settings\<your name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup.

One difference I do know: The Startup folder under Program Files is *not*
considered a "trusted location" by the macro security mechanism. If you go
to Tools > Macro > Security > Trusted Publishers and check the box for
"Trust all installed add-ins and templates", the globals under Documents and
Settings will be allowed to run their macros but the ones under Program
Files will be challenged.
