I have a Drop-Down Form Field set up on my form.  When I enter all the items
for the drop-down list, it displays the first item as my default.  Is there a
way of entering a default message (example: Please choose an item from the
list) instead of displaying the first item on the list?

Thank you

Make the first item be:
"Please choose an item from the list"

Then, on the way out, check if the user has indeed selected an item or not.

Are you talking about userforms or on-line forms?

Thank you for your help - Although, if I add the message "Please choose an
item from the list" it takes up too much space on the drop-down list.  How
come the text form field has default text and the drop-dowm form field
doesn't?  To answer your question, I'm taking about the userforms.

Thanks again, Karen

Use a shorter message:
"Choose an item"

What code are you using to fill the dropdown?

I do not understand your dilemma.
In your original post, you stated that the first item is the default and now
you are writing that there is no default...

This makes me think you are not talking about a userform.
Just to make sure we are talking about the same thing, I think the type of
form that you are referring to is
an on-line form, not a userform.  A userform is a custom dialog that
is usually called via a macro (Like the Font or Save As dialogs).

See the article "How to create a Userform" at:

Thank you again for your help and I'm sorry for the confusion.  I guess I am
creating an online form and not a user form - Sorry.  What I want is the
default text to just show up in the form field shading area and not be part
of the drop-down list.  If you notice, when you are using the text form
field, there's a field for default text and there's not one for the drop-down
form field.
Have a great weekend, Karen

The default text you speak of for the text field is actual text in the text
field, but when the field is selected and text is typed on the keyboard, the
default gets replaced. If the text field is not selected then it will print
out with the default text like any other text. The same thing applies to
dropdown. The default is the first one and, like the text field, it is part
of the field itself.
