TOC in a consistent style

I am trying to generate a table of contents consistently but this is
difficult using the ³Create Table of Contents² menu item because it seems to
change each time and I cannot get the results I need. So I¹ll have to create
a script.

What I want to do is have three levels (currently the styles are not called
Heading 1, 2 and 3 but I can change them if it makes life easier) but I only
want page numbers on the third level - the first two are effectively
headings within the TOC.

When I generate the auto TOC I can only choose whether I want page numbers
or not for all three levels. Also I select that the page numbers go to the
right but only the first two levels go to the right, the third level stays
right beside the contents text. I cannot see where I can change this in the
TOC styles. Maybe put a right tab at the right margin for TOC3? But the TOC1
and TOC2 styles do not have any tabs.

I have altered all three TOC styles and TOC3 has a bullet point - maybe
that¹s what is confusing the auto TOC

Can anyone help me with developing such a TOC? I am using Word 2004 on Mac
Tiger.

Hi Sol

You don't need a script to achieve what you want.

First, see "Customizing your table of contents with switches" at
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TOCSwitches.htm. You'll see that
the \n switch turns off page numbers for the levels you specify. So \n 1-2
will turn off page numbers for levels 1 and 2.

Delete all tabs from all the TOC styles. You'll see that when Word creates a
Table of Contents, it applies direct formatting to put a tab at the right
margin. You can see this through Format > Tabs. And, Word puts a Tab
immediately before the page number. So page numbers will be justified to
the right.
