I made some buttons in VB for Word that linked to other documents.  They
worked when I first made them.  When I went back to check them nothing
happens when I click them.
I went into VB and everything should work.  I tried clicking on exit design
mode and it tells me "the macros in this project are disabled. Please refer
to the online help or documentation of the host application to determine how
to enable macros."
I tried to enable it by going to macros and security in MS Word, but it
doesnt work.  Any suggestions.

You must first enable macros and then REOPEN the document.
