Hi all,
we're using WebDAV to allow users to edit documents on a central server. We
monitor the documents via the WebDAV properties, to catch when the users
updates and releases the document, as we need to update a database
accordingly.
However, we have a problem with WebDAV sometimes reporting the documents
released too soon.
Has anyone else had this problem, or know of a possible reason for this?
Best wishes,
Thomas

Thomas,
I recall seeing an inquiry or two of yours here previously.
Perhaps you don't monitor what participants inquiry about in this particular
NG?
The questions for assistance are basic issues. Without intending to
discredit anybody's abilities, I would like you to consider that most folks
here are using Word to create webpages because either they don't have the
time to learn proper html/CSS or they are overwhelmed by what they see in
html/CSS. Most are even unable to get Word to create functional webpages and
inquire here for assistance. Some are not even experienced enough to
determine the proper paths to their web pages or images.
In all honesty? You cannot believe that any participants in this NG are
capable of assisting you with Apache server side issues related to Word
Documents?

this is actually my first inquiry to a Word related NG. If you feel that
someone named 'Thomas' has posted here before, it because the nick 'Thomas'
is widely used on NGs.
But thanks for you input.

Hi Thomas,
What version(s) of Word are you using?
Since you also posted this in the IIS newsgroup in addition
to the Word Web Authoring newsgroup I'm assuming this is
some configuration of a Windows server (version?) with IIS
implemented?
Can you provide an example of how a file is being used and at
what point you are getting an indication that the release
occured sooner than expected (i.e. is it when you save a
Word file or ??)
Has this been an ongoing issue or something that started recently
and if recently were there any security updates or other updates
installed?

Hi Bob,
thanks for your reply.
The documents reside on a Windows 2003 server running IIS 6. Clients use
Word 2000.
After digging into the problem, we've discovered that Word doesn't release
the lock too soon - sometimes Word doesn't even start a valid WebDAV
communication with IIS. It opens the document, but doesn't upload changes as
it's supposed to do.
What happens is:
A user requests a document. We check the document out of a document store
and it's put on a IIS server in a Web folder. The user opens the document
via WebDAV. While the user work, we monitor the WebDAV properties, so we
catch when the document is updated and released, so we get the latest
version checked back to the store. And in 99% of the time this works like a
charm.
Problem is that last 1% of the time. A few times per day (out of about 500
documents worked on each day), it appears that Word/IIS doesn't enter into a
normal WebDAV relationship. Meaning the document doesn't get uploaded,
causing us to loose what changes the user makes to the document.
This behaviour is completely random. It's different clients that get the
problem, it's different documents. They get it one time they work with a
document, but not the next 8 times and so on.
We're not really sure if it's a Word problem or an IIS problem, all we can
see is that the document isen't uploaded to the server when the user saves
the document. That's also why I posted to both Word and IIS groups.
I really hope you (or anyone else) can help. Thanks in advance.
Best wishes,
Thomas
