using: MS Word 2000

i am attempting to create a hyperlink from one document,
to a specific point in another document using a bookmark.

i create a bookmark in one document. i then open another
document and insert a hyperlink and choose the document
with the associated bookmark i have just created, and
select the bookmark within thin the link. it results with
something like: D:\Links\Doc1.doc#TESTBOOK

when i click on the link, it takes me to the top of
Doc1.doc, NOT to the bookmark TESTBOOK which has been set.

the bookmark has definitely been created correctly as when
i create a link WITHIN doc1.doc using the bookmark
TESTBOOK it works... it just doesn't work when i try to
create the same link outside the document.

any help would be appreciated.

Hi Sally,

You didn't mention if you're using a browser for this
(broken in Word 2000) or using Word to link between
documents, in which case the link within this article
may help.

thanks for the info and speedy response.

i have been trying both options... ie. link from one word
document to another word document; and link from a browser
to a word document.

despite the documentation you've provided, which seems to
indicate that the anchoring WILL work from Word doc to
Word doc, it doesn't appear to be working for me. the link
still jumps to the top of the linked document, rather than
to the anchor.

I am having the same problem. I have been trying to use
the link through Internet Explorer and the link goes to
the top of the word document and not to the bookmark. But
if I use Word to open the htm file, the link goes to the
bookmark. I would prefer to use IE to link my files, so
any help in solving this issue is much appreciated.

krystine,
I'm a bit confused by your inquiry?
Either:
1) It's your desire to use an html page to open a "plug-in" Word document?
or
2) It's your desire to use Word a created web page to apply the link to
another html page and bookmark? (regardless or origin.)
Krystine - 03 Sep 2004 00:24 GMT
Well, it is my desire to create a webpage with Word and
then use that webpage as a sort of Index page for multiple
word documents. So I want to be able to click the link and
go to a specific spot in a specific word document.

If I just make a table of contents in word and just use
word and not internet explorer then the linking to the
specific area in a different document works, but I would
like to be able to do that in IE because then I can just
right click on the link and press print instead of
individually opening each document.

So in summary, I just want to be able to index a bunch of
different documents in a webpage format. Thanks for your
help.

Krystine,
               What you desire is:

1) It's your desire to use an html page to open a "plug- in" Word document?

I'm not sure it's possible.
I'm not aware of any method in html, because the plug-in of the bookmark you
desire is run by the Word software.

Perhaps Bob Buckland or one of the other MVP may point you to a VBA method
or perhaps there's an ASP method.

Hi Krystine,

You didn't mention the version of Word you're using.
If it's Word 2000 then, as mentioned earlier in this
thread, it's a broken feature in that version (jumping
to bookmarks when going through the browser).

Hi Krystine,

If I understand you correctly you are trying to achieve
two different purposes for Word 2002.

(A) Use the IE feature or right click and select 'Print Target'
on a hyperlink, which points to a Word document.

(B) When in IE and you left click the same link it will go to
a specific bookmark in a Word document.

It may be the way that Internet Explorer is configured
(i.e. is the document opening in Internet Explorer with
Word as a helper app or in Word)?

When you open through Internet Explorer the jump to
bookmark feature works but seems to not do that when
.DOC files are set to open in Word.

From My computer if you choose Tools=>Folder Options,
then 'File Types, scroll down to .DOC, select [Change]
then [Advanced] is the box for [x] browse in same Window
selected or deselected?

Hi guys,
I realize I'm jumping into this extremely late, but I seem to have the exact
problem Bob described in purpose B. I can get bookmarks to function on my
computer because it opens Word documents through Internet explorer when you
click on a link. But my coworkers have their settings to open Word into MS
Word when clicking on the link and the bookmarks don't work.
I am using Word 2002 as well and I am aware of the solution Bob posted by
going into the Folders options. However, I am posting public documents and
would like the bookmarks to work for anyone wanting to view these documents,
regardless of their settings.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Stephen

Hello Stephen,
In your phrase" I am posting public documents," are
the documents going to an intranet or the internet?
Stephen - 21 Nov 2004 16:29 GMT
