Frames Frustration

How do I get two frames to open at the same time as my "index" page?
Everything works fine until I actually preview it in a browser- then I either
get the left frame which I want to always stay on the page, it's where I have
my links or I get the right hand frame (home) but I can't seem to get both to
show up together in the browser window- can someone tell me how to set this
up???

Hello Cyndi,
I wasn't aware that Word had an option for creating web
pages comprised of frames?

In any event, using Word to create web pages is something that Word was
never intended be used for by MS.

Attempting to use a lame tool to create lame frames is even less productive.
Frames are frustrating to visitors.
Many webmasters upon implementing frames don't even utilize a no-frames link
to assure their pages get crawled by the robots.

I'm using word 2003, I simply want a stationary table of contents with links
that allow the page to open on the right hand side while the left hand
contents stay stationary. I'm working on our school's website, I built one
last year with Word and uploaded it with Frontpage- then the host changed
servers or something then I started getting all these strange question marks
inserted everywhere. I'm trying now to build a new one with Word and will use
an ftp program to upload it. I may have used an older version of Word on the
old page- or did the frame thru FP. I can't remember- I built my small
business web page with word- uploaded with ftp and have no problems, but I
didn't use frames. I know nothing about html and have no desire to learn- I'm
familiar with Word and it is easy for me to get what I want on to the page
with minimal fuss- except for the "frame" I need! Here's the "old" site
www.stastjohn.org, I'm sure you'll notice the random question marks. It's
not a great site, it was my first- but they're thrilled- it was free. Any
help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

This page loads fine and only question marks (or X's) (for failed link
images) that I see are the slow loading oversized school picture.
This image is sized a 2013 x 829 Pixels and is to large for a web page.
Neither is it likely compressed for web access?

640 x 480 or 800 X 600 (extreme).
It's much better to display a smaller image say 400 x 200 and then provide a
link to a 2013 x 829 larger image

Hi Cyn,

Glad to hear that you were successful with your first effort :)

Your left hand (nav) frame appears to be from Word 2003 (v11)
and FrontPage 5, while the older frames on the right appear
to be from Word 2000.

Were you able to get what you wanted then in the left frame?
If you're seeing odd characters in that frame you may want to
check your 'encoding' setting in Tools=>Options=>General=>[Web Options]
in Word 2003.

As LostInSpace mentions, you may want to reduce the file size
of the graphics by running them through a program such as
http://www.irfanview.com then uploading the same named graphic
(with reduced file size) to replace the existing one.

I want what I'm building now with Word 2003 to work just like the "old page"
link that I sent. I can't get both frames to open in a browser though- I
either get only the table of contents OR the photo of the school. I really
don't want to use front page again as that and word didn't seem to work well
together. You'll see the random question marks if you go to the tuition rates
page- there's a couple at the top and a few in the bottom paragraphs. In
updating the page most often I'm sent word docs that I can just adjust the
background if desired and save as a web page and then link appropriately-
Word is wonderfully easy for this- I just wish it were truly intended for
this purpose!

Hi Cyn,

Since we don't have a URL for the new site can only
address the current one, other than to refer you to
the link provided previously on how to create Frames Pages
in Word. (each frame is a separate document and the
Frames Pages is a display mechanism).

Where you're seeing the question marks appears to
be from using Tools=>Autocorrect and the the autoformat
choice to change quotes to 'smart quotes'.

The Smart quote characters will usually appear okay if
you use Tools=>Options=>General in Word and choose Windows
encoding, but not if using UTF-8. It's probably safer to
turn off the smart quotes feature for web pages.

If you go the tuition rates page right click and choose
encoding, make a note of what type comes up then choose
'auto select' and see if the question marks become quotes
or apostrophes and if the encoding changes at that point
if you recheck it.

fwiw, page looks fine from here: XP Pro, SP2, IE6. Only problem
I see is slow speed; bloated, esp graphic
