When I try and open it opens okay however if i try to

I have office xp pro, with sp1.  If I am entering a date into any date formatted cell by typing the date as 010604, excel will return a date other that jan 06,2004.  Any help here....

How can I resolve this issue with Excel 2000?   This
appears when I try to open an Excel
spreadsheet, "Excel.exe has generated errors and will be
closed by windows".
