I have a query in MS Access that uses the monthname function.  When I try to
create a pivot table from external data (using the DB as the source) I get an
error that the function isn't supported in Excel.  Is there another function

When I paste data from information available on the web and paste it into
Excel the page view changes by removing the visible cell borders.  This makes
for a strange looking screen and makes cell selection tricky.
How can I restore the worksheet to the standard format?

In excel you have to protect the entire worksheet and then select a range
that can be edited.  You should also have a function if you want to protect
individual cells only or a range of cells and the rest of the worksheet can
be edited
