Why are the cells limited to 256 columns and 65,536 rows? Once a format is

I created a workbook that has a summary page with cells that link to cells in
other pages of the workbook.  These cells are in date format.  When there is
no entry in the cells of the other pages, the summary page cell shows

We have one main workbook that the supervisor fills out that lists jobs
times staff etc. I've just set up links to the daily worksheet workbook

When I open the workbook excel asks if I want to update links to other
