In the document I am typing, the computer has decided to put in lines of black square dots, mainly after paragraphs. They are a clutter. What are they for and how do I switch them off? thanks

Folks, Margins within Word are displayed incorrectly: E.g. On opening a new Word document the Margin ruler diplays numbers 36,72,108,144 etc. instead of 1,2,3,4 etc. How can I revert back? Any help would be gratefully received.
