When I select File/Save as in Word or Excel, I get an hour-glass and no response. Task manager shows Not Responding. I select End Task and lose my file.

I noticed on a document I was composing that occasionally some curious "objects" appear in blue beneath certain text. For example, under the word "I'll", a thin rectangle blue rectangle appears under the I and apostrophe. What could be doing this. Is it friend or foe?

Using XP Home If I place a large text box on a new blank page in Word 2002, I get a wide black horizontal band across the bottom of the text box. It hasn't always done this. What might I have accidentally changed to cause this?
