On a new computer (XP) I can access my extensive contact list from the
Outlook "contacts" button.  However, I can't get the email program to
automatically fill in names as I type.  Also, the address book shows empty.

I change the person's email address in the Address Book, yet when I create a
new email for him, it keeps coming up with the old address - double check,

It is all too easy to mistakenly send an e-mail to a wrong contact in
Outlook. (I have done this only once but the risk is significant.)
If one can selectively turn off the automatic look up feature for a contact
she/he chooses then this risk would be reduced.
