When I open word it automatically brings up a new
document,the mouse/curser works fine, but I can't type
anything in it. Then when I bring up an old document it
seems frozen and I can't type in it either. What can I do

I inserted the date and selected "update automatically",

The tools menu in Word is corrupted and has at least three (and sometimes more) mail merge items in the list.  How can I fix this?

I ran across an interesting problem. If I use Insert | AutoText |
AutoText and select the "author, page #, date" entry by clicking on
it, Word will go into a loop. It shows 100% CPU use and is
non-responsive.
