I can't explain this very clearly because its very weird, but hopefully you
will make sense of the following:
1) I have a 40 or so page Word 2000 doc, which consists of around 80% of
table layouts, but simple table layouts at that.

When trying to save a Word 2003 document, when I try to access the drop down
menu to indicate which folder to save a file in, the program freezes.

I accidentally pressed the shift button too long while typing.  I clicked ok
to get out of the dialog box that appeared, but now my keyboard and mouse
