iopen word but soon get a message saying word has stopped

I Word 2000 or xp. I can't seem to remember. My problem is someone sent me a
file in Word 2007 and I can't get it to open where I can read it.

I see in Document Recovery the file (Document1) recovered but when I try to
close this file, I receive the message cannot delete file: Cannot read from
the source file or disk.  I believe this is the normal.dot file and I have
renamed this file to see if I can fix this issue but ...
