I need to convert a French Word.doc file to an MS-DOS Text with Layout file (asc) to be used on the company mainframe. The mainframe strips the special characters (such as é, ë, ê, è). Is there some trick to this?

I recall being able to get the Table of Contents to show up as bookmarks on the side tabs after converting a word document to a pdf. I thought that the TOC (hyperlinks) converted to linkable bookmarks in the resulting pdf
