When I try and insert an excel file Word takes me to a
file conversion box and does not seem to know it is an
*.XLS file.

I believe that at some point, I could open an *.xml in
Word 2k and see the xml tags, which I could run a macro
against to extract data and convert to a flat file.
I haven't tried this in over a year or so with Word 2k ---

Im using the save as method to save the document as HTML

it works fine with Office XP and Office 2000 Premium.
