I have printed Word docs out to PDF before and the hyperlinks have shown up (at other organizations). (I have also printed Frame files out to PDF and the links show up too.)

I recently upgraded to Word 2002 (from 2000). In 2000 I could view and use a small toolbar that was placed there by Adobe Acrobat 5 - thus enabling conversions to pdf. The toolbar has disappeared in 2002 - not even in the View > Toolbars list.
