Everytime I modify the deafult save options to .doc, it reverts back to .docx

The IME for Office XP worked great, but apparently it doesn't install on a
workstation running Office 2007.

I recently upgraded to Word 2007.  I haven't used themes before, but now that
I've tried them I don't see anything changing when I switch from one theme to
the other.  What exactly is "themes" supposed to do????

When I open documents sent to me by email in Word 2003 they have a background
which appears like lined paper or squares.  This makes reading the document
very difficult.  If I create a new document from Word I do not get these

Word form with check boxes, when sent as an attachment in Outlook 2003 and
opened from Outlook, loses the selections.  If you detach the form and open
it in word 2003, the check boxes are correct.  
In testing this, it seems that if you use a mouse with the scroll button
