How do I change bmp digital snaps to jpeg?

Word files that have big photos (1) will not show photos within Word,
although the files to show the photos when exported to Publisher or PDF; (2)
the files also either slow down to a crawl, freeze up, or Word crashes as I

I'm laying out a newsletter-type document in Word.  When I create a pdf of
it, one text block does not appear.
Any ideas of what might be causing that?

We use template files to help standardize some documents.  I have noticed
with word 2003, the graphic in the header is displayed, and printed, mirrored
and rotated.  The graphic is displayed properly when the file is opened with
previous versions of word.  Any suggestions?

Drawing inserted or modified (when created with a previous version of MS Word
2003) do not display AutoShapes parts when returning to Word w2003. Texts
appears but any lines, squares or colored shape are not visible when closing
the edit window of Word.Picture.8.
