Text box and captions always have a border even though no border is selected.

I am completely unfamiliar with Word Art but am trying to muddle my way

Hi--Word is driving me crazy :) !
I have a text box, and I would like to add a double border around it. I
tried to do this with the rectangle shape. When I click the Rectangle icon on
the Drawing toolbar, I get a giant box that says "Create your drawing here".

This seems like it should be intuitive, but it isn't......  I have a tiered
pyramid diagram, with the text at the lower levels having tons of room, and
the text at the top level having almost none......would like to make the top
