Someone said there are a couple of professional non-Microsoft word processing softwares used in book publishing that don't suffer from the long doc frailty that MS Word does. Can anyone tell me the names of any such software?

I want to number pages of a large document in my unique way. I like numbering my documents in chapter-page format. For instance, chapter 1 has 4 pages so my numbering sequence would go 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, then 2-1 ... I've figured out how to include the chapter but the page numbers ...

Is there anyway I can change a page break into a section break? Say that Word has automatically created a page break because a table row has expanded onto the next page, but I don't want a page break but a section break
