When doing mailmerge in Word 2002 the amounts pulled

Hope this query makes sense - my first post..
I'm using Word2003 mail merge to add address block into
standard letters. Data source is Excel 2003 XLS, & I'm
using "advanced" filter facility within mail merge.

With Word 2002, in my canvas, I have the field PRINTDATE.  
After the mail merge with a Word data source, this field
in the footer is now a free text field.  I have the same
problem with the field PAGE.  Why this is happen ?
