I need to protect a form that is to be mail merged into an email. My protect area is grayed as soon as a begin inserting the mail merge. Is this not possible?

Recently upgraded from v 2000 to v 2003. In prior version, I had a mail merge set up to link with data from excel. In the footer I have a page number with the intent that when merged, 34 pages are created and the page numbers go from 1-34.

I have a main document set up with drop-down form field and (using the forms toolbar) and text form fields. Whenever I do a mail merge, the new merged document has removed all of the text form fields. How do I prevent this from happening?
