in a "multiple words" mergefield, allowing for exceptions?

How do I insert a field, or create a new field so when doing a mail merge I
just get the first, last, or whatever field I need into my Word Document?

When I merge an excel document with a word document, the first column is
formatted as a text field.  When the documents are merged, the final document
converst the text to numeric and prints out a 0.

I would like to use Word in Office XP to mail merge onto "4-up" laser
postcards. I am using this for a mass mailing in the real estate business.  
Anybody know how i can set up word so that the mailing list will print out
for addresses in the appropriate spots on the 8 1/2 x 11 ...

The label choices in Word do not have the Avery label I need.  So I
downloaded their template from avery.com.  Now I can't figure out where to
