The salutation field is being overlooked. When the letters are merged, the first name field is being used instead. Eg.: Dear Dianne Jackson instead of Dear Dianne. How do I fix this?

I am trying to merge a word document with data fields from a SQL database via a webbased program. I am able to pull data fields without a problem; however, when I try to perform an if statement, or a skip if, it does not work.
