I got a problem when using mail merge. I have a excel file which is the
merge source, it contains some simplified chinese character.
When I use mail merge, some character changed to "?", but not all of
chinese character have problem.

I am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction. Merge
fields are quite powerful, and I have a .mer file that I am using for
my datasource.

I need to create an 'initial' field from a first name field, so I only need
the first letter of the firstname. I believe it is some sort of 'ADVANCE'
function however I am having trouble making it work. Can anyone suggest the
switch I need to do this?
