How can I write a formula including "to the power of" P^2?

What if this exact problem (see below) is ocurring in Word

I recently upgraded from Office XP to Office 2003. I
mostly create outlines using Word.
Something has changed since switching to Word 2003,
however.

I have read the help.  I have been to Borders and read books.  I have asked
