how does one automaticly number paragraphs

On a two section document I used Words menus to insert page numbers in
the header:
Section 1
Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}

I have a master document with 45 subdocuments. Each document has a a footer
with section number - page starting at 1 for each section e.g. 40-1 etc
If the document files are read only then the pages numbering does not work.
All section 1 pages are 1-1 all section 2 are 2-2 all ...

What exactly is required to permanently change the paragraph style used in
numbered and bulleted lists?
I want to permanently change it to space a half-line (3pt) after each item.
What's the secret to achieiving that?

I have created a manual which is divided by chapters.
Can anyone tell me how to print just 1 chapter instead of the whole document?
I have tried to highlight a selection and print but it ends up not printing
the footers on each page.

When printing a (for example) ten page document the page numbers on the print
preview appear as "Page 1 of 4, Page 2 of 4" etc. But when the document is
physically printed, either to a printer or PDF the headers then read "Page 1
of 1" for the first page, through to "Page 4 of 4" ...

I am preparing a report that uses four levels of outline numbering for
section headings. I want each level number to include the numbers from the
previous sections; e.g., <Subsection 1.2>  followed by <Subsection 1.2.1>
followed by <Subsection 1.2.1.1.>  The numbering works fine ...

After running into list numbering problems in a 200-page document (using
Word 2003), I  discovered John McGhie's article on the web "Word's Numbering
Explained." Phew! I previously had no idea numbering is such a complex
matter.

There are some documents created by Word2k3 SP2 with numbering & with some
reasons it just
can't show correctly ( disappear ) when the document is opened by Word2k3
SP3 or Word2k7
