We are using a format in which caption numbers begin with the current heading number, as in 3.4.1-1, 3.4.1-2, etc. If we then have appendixes A, B, and C, using Heading 5 style, can we modify the figure captions to pick up the letter from heading 5, in the same document?

I need each section of a manual to be a separate document. So I reset the number of the Heading 1 at the start of each document, and the lower-level headings pick it up correctly, except when I reopen the file, it has reset back to 1. How do I reset the number so that it lasts? ...
